Author and journalist, who died a year ago at the age of 62 from oesophageal cancer, was well-known for his views on religion, exemplified by his 2007 book God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. I am in fact an atheist, but my personal views aside, do not condemn this book simply because the title disagrees with your beliefs. Imagine a book that compiles all the critiques that have been marshalled against Islam and that now directs them against all the religions of all times. God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything - Christopher Hitchens. God is not Great: How religion poisons everything, that with this title Hitchens is implying that no religious person has ever done anything that could be thought of as good, and that religion is evil unalloyed and unrelieved. After missing last month's meeting, I made it to this one for a very lively discussion of Christopher Hitchens' latest book, God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. However, against all expectations, I did recently read Christopher Hitchens' god is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. I find the idea that religion poisons everything a little hard to swallow. God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens. God is not Great - How Religion Poisons Everything. First of all, I like the title god is not Great which alludes to the Arabic Allahu Akbar (God is Great). I read this book some years ago, when I lived in the UK, there it is published under the more moderate title of God Is Not Great: The Case Against Religion. Before I begin to review this best-selling book by Christopher Hitchens, I need to first explain to you Occam's Razor. Hitchens, one of our great political pugilists, delivers the best of the recent rash of atheist manifestos. A succession of bestselling books have torn into religion—Sam Harris's “The End of Faith”, Richard Dawkins's “The God Delusion” and Christopher Hitchens's “God is not Great—How Religion Poisons Everything”. Secondly, Christopher Hitchens is a polemicist by his own admission and one should keep that in mind while reading this book.
